A Study of the Fruit of the Spirit

Each month, the Grammar school will be focusing on a different Fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5, along with a scripture verse and hymn of the month. For the next couple of blog posts, we will be looking at each fruit in detail, studying and digesting the Lord’s truth and what each of them means in our lives as believers.

The Fruit of the Spirit is for us to abide in Christ’s nature as we learn to be more Christlike in our sanctification. God’s will for every Christian’s life is sanctification. Of course, in His sovereign will he cares about the details, what school we will attend, what job we take, what we do every day. Rather than just “what’s next,” as far as our location and our duties, His will is to, in whatever circumstance, make us more like Him. In Romans 12:1, Paul specifically speaks about believers being a “living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,” and continues on to say that we should not conform to the patterns of this world, because “Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will (3).

This fruit is given by the Holy Spirit to equip us in our journey of being this “living sacrifice,” and becoming more like Christ, conforming to him instead of this world.

“For if we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:25). These attributes are just a natural response to our harmony in walking with Christ, as we draw near to Christ we will experience his truth and his love.

Some seasons bring us to our knees in prayerful surrender, others bring praise. True joy is in them both.
